A crown is essentially a custom-made “cap” that is cemented to your existing tooth structure, restoring its natural size, shape and colour. Crowns are not only used for aesthetic purposes, as they can also strengthen a tooth, and are recommended after root canal treatment has been done on a tooth or where due to decay or trauma not a lot of natural tooth structure is left.
Bridges are used when a gap, or missing tooth, is present. Essentially a bridge is a three unit restoration, consisting of two crowns on the ends, with a solid restoration in the centre. The bridge is cemented to the teeth adjacent to the gap, holding the centre piece in place and acting like a bridge. They can replace one or several missing teeth. Your dentist will recommend and discuss the best solution for your individual situation.
Inlays and onlays repair larger cracks or cavities in the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, increasing their strength while maintaining their appearance. These fillings that are made of porcelain are glued into place. Being stronger than any other type of filling they can increase the strength of the tooth.
These are thin, tooth coloured porcelain or ceramic shells that are carefully crafted to bond and cover the front of unsightly teeth. They are a more conservative treatment than an artificial crown and can often be used as an alternative if the underlying tooth is strong and healthy.
Veneers are placed on the front teeth, excellent for treating chipped, discoloured, slightly misaligned or misshapen teeth or gaps between teeth.
Composite veneers are placed on the front surface of the front teeth directly by the dentist. Composite is made of synthetic resin combined with other restorative materials. It is colour matched to your natural tooth enamel and can be used to repair minor chips and cracks, close gaps and cover permanent stains. They are more cost effective than porcelain veneers and can last many years with good oral hygiene and regular maintenance appointment with your dentist.
